Site characteristics
The Mayombe Forest is a vast transboundary rainforest spanning approximately 10,000 km² across Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Cabinda (Angola). As the westernmost extension of the Guineo-Congolian biome, its dense, humid forests connect the Congo Basin to the Atlantic coast, forming a critical ecological corridor that supports exceptional biodiversity and facilitates genetic exchange across national borders (Cravo-Mota et al. 2026).
Within the southwestern part of this forest lies Mayombe National Park (MNP), covering approximately 2,000 km². The park protects one of Angola's last remaining intact blocks of tropical rainforest and represents a key stronghold for the country's forest biodiversity (Cravo-Mota et al. 2026).

A management plan for Mayombe National Park was developed in 2019 through an extensive stakeholder consultation process involving government agencies, park staff, local communities, traditional leaders, and the private sector (Ron 2020). The plan outlines management actions to address key conservation threats, including a zoning scheme and a proposed park expansion based on ecological and social considerations. While implementation has been partially supported through projects funded by UNDP-GEF, FAO, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other partners, additional funding and cross-border collaboration remain essential. The plan emphasizes community participation and sustainable livelihood development, consistent with Angola's protected area legislation, while the Jane Goodall Institute provides technical support and assists with the rehabilitation of confiscated great apes (Ron 2020).
